IFTU Call on May Day 2017

Long Live May Day                                                                     Uphold the Tradition of Struggle

FIGHT FOR FREEING MARUTI UNION LEADERS

FIGHT FOR EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK

FIGHT FOR THE PROTECTION OF WORKERS RIGHTS

On May 1, 2017, the working class the world over will be organizing the 131st anniversary of May Day recalling the events that took place at the Hay Market Square in Chicago in the US in the first days of May, 1886. These events eventually lead to the clarion call to the workers of the world by the first Congress of the 2nd International marking May 1 as a day of struggle and class solidarity. On this occasion workers collect together to pledge once again to fight for an egalitarian society “that secures welfare of every human being” as stated by Parsons, one of the four hanged to death for having organized the workers to fight for an eight hour working day. Thus May Day has become a symbol of struggle against the terrible conditions of work and life, against exploitation by capital and for a society free from loot and oppression. May Day,2017 will be held under conditions that are heavily loaded against the working class the world over with myriad forms of attacks on the lives and rights of workers.… Read More

Largesclae Destruction in Bhadrak (Odisha) by Hindutva forces : Stop Appeasing RSS

RSS-BJP have once again targeted Odisha. They have done well in the recent panchayat elections and are now aiming to come to power in the state. To contend for power in the state, RSS selected Bhadrak, a commercial town with nearly 40% Muslim population, shopkeepers and labourers.

The oft-repeatedly story went like RSS-BJP people who had assembled to celebrate formation of their party two day after Ram Navami procession alleged that some Muslim youth have posted derogatory remarks against Ram and Sita. But even before the police and administration are allowed to act on their complaint, RSS mobs burn down shops belonging to Muslim community. A rumour was floated by these past masters of rumour-mongering and owners of the largest rumour mill, that Muslims have burnt down a shop of a Hindu owner to spur the crowd collected by them to indulge in burning down shops.

In the ‘peace committee’ routinely called by the Administration in such cases, mainly to cover up their inaction and shield the guilty, representatives of Muslims denied any wrong doing or indulging in any destruction. As soon as this meeting ended, the RSS mobilized a big motor cycle procession to terrorize the Muslims and another orgy of violence and destruction followed.… Read More

CPI-ML New Democracy Democratic Rights Kashmir

Respect Democratic Aspirations of Kashmiri People

Widespread protests in Kashmir in which 8 persons have been killed and over three hundred (including a hundred security persons) have been injured marked the election to Srinagar by-election. According to the Election Commission only 7% votes were cast and polling had to be folded up by noon in most of the polling booths due to people’s protests. This tells about the real situation in Kashmir. State’s plan to hold election and to flaunt it as a proof of Kashmiris acquiescence with status quo has fallen flat in face of determined opposition of the people.

According to reports, a new phase in the people’s struggle in Kashmir has unfolded in which people intervene in encounters of militants by security forces. There are numerous such incidents. Army authorities including Army Chief have warned the protesters calling them as supporters of ‘terrorism’. Functionaries of Central Govt. have also issued statements on similar lines.

The large scale participation of the people in protests unequivocally questions the narrative of Indian Govt. that unrest in Kashmir is a handiwork of Pakistan aided handful of ‘terrorists’. That this has not sunk deep into minds of the people of the country as mainstream media does not cover it, and to that extent it does, it is to reinforce the narrative of the Govt.… Read More

Trump Administration, Hands Off Syria

In an about turn on his campaign rhetoric, US President Trump ordered missile attack against Syria targeting an airbase in Homs. The avowed reason for this attack was alleged use of chemical weapons by Assad Govt. of Syria against civilians in Idlib province controlled by the rebel forces mainly Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra now renamed. Trump and his Admn. has flaunted this missile attack as a proof of his decisive action compared to Obama’s alleged dithering in face of such a situation in 2013.

In fact this action had little to do with any use of chemical weapons. It is born out of domestic compulsion where the ‘deep state’ and bipartisan leadership is mounting pressure on Trump, investigating links of his campaign with Russian Govt. His National Security Advisor has been forced to quit and the chairman of the Congressional committee has been forced to recuse himself. This investigation implies the alleged softness of Trump towards Russia. Acolytes of Obama Admn. and many top leaders of Democratic Party have mounting pressure on Trump to act against Syria. Trump has sought to parry these attacks by this missile attack.

That this attack had little to do with alleged use of chemical weapon by Govt.… Read More

AIKMS Statement on UP Loan Waiver

UP state executive committee of AIKMS has criticized BJP giving just partial relief to debt ridden farmers in loan waiver by the BJP govt and backtracking from its promises made during the elections.

BJP had made two loud promises in its election manifesto. One was that all the cropping loans of the small and marginal peasants, i.e. those with less than 2 hectares (5 acres) shall be waived immediately on its assuming office. Second was that all small and marginal farmers shall be given “byaj mukt fasli rin”, i.e. interest free crop loans.

Total crop loan burden of small and marginal farmers was Rs. 62,000 crores. Of his the govt. has waived only Rs 30,729 crores, leaving an Rs 31 thousand odd crores outstanding. This has been done by limiting the waived amount to Rs 1 lac of the loans taken upto 31st March, 2016 and pending till 31, March 2017.

During last rabi crop, due to extreme shortage of cash due to demonetization done by banks on the one hand hardly any KCC loans were disbursed and farmers were put to great distress as their crop could not sell. Now of the total outstanding loans of Rs 62,000 crores, only half the dues have been waived.Read More

Higher Education Under Attack: An All Out Attempt for Privatization, Saffronization, and Assault on Democratization And Rationality

Current relevance
Ever since Modi Government has taken over, Institutions of learning g are under constant attacks. We saw in case of FTII, where a person who was a soft porn star and only other known thing he has done is role of Yudhistara in serial Mahabharata has been made President of FTII. This has sparked long protest by the students; A group of students who made Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle and discussed among many things pro-imperialist economic policies and faced a ban which was lifted after country wide protests; Then came the Rohith Vemula incident followed by an outburst in country exposing both caste and communal bias of the government as well as its support to PEP. country wide protests fanned, putting government on back-foot. Even while it was going on, Famous JNU incident took place on 9th of February 2016. False propaganda, a ready machinery to blow it out of proportion and create a frenzy to cloud facts and rationality- the time tested methods of RSS were in full swing and attempt was made to create an atmosphere that JNU is a breeding ground of Anti-Nationals and should be shut down. There was an outburst of protest by democratic, patriotic people all over the country to counter this.… Read More

ORGANISE PROTEST PROGRAMMES ON APRIL 4th, 5th IN SUPPORT OF THE MARUTI WORKERS’ STRUGGLE, AGAINST THE COURT JUDGEMENT SENTENCING 13 WORKERS TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT

On the 18th of March 2017, the Gurgaon Additional Sessions Court convicted 13 Maruti Suzuki workers to life imprisonment for the killing of a manager on 18 July, 2012. 117 workers who already spent four years in jail were acquitted earlier while another 14 were given a three year sentence though they too were in jail for four years. 148 workers were in jail for four years having been denied bail since 2012. Of the 13 sentenced to life 12 are body members of the workers union and Jiyalal, a worker who was attacked by a supervisor and abused on the basis of caste that day of the incident, is the 13th worker. The court pronounced this judgement without enough evidence and appears to have been influenced by the management of this Japanese company and the prevailing anti-worker attitudes of the state administration. This wholly baseless judgement against the Maruti workers cannot but evoke condemnation.

The whole case is made out on the basis of the incident that occurred on 18th July, 2012 in which the HR manager Avanish Dev lost his life. The FIR filed by the police contained between 500 to 600 unnamed accused and the company terminated the services of 546 workers for the violence on that day.… Read More
