The Indian Federation of Trade Unions condemns the ongoing severe state repression in Tuticorin where on 22nd and 23rd May 2018 police firings on protestors against the Sterlite plant resulted in the martyrdom of 13 people. House to house searches without warrants, indiscriminate arrests are on. Now the Tamil Nadu govt is also extending the repression to supporters of the people’s movement. In this context IFTU condemns the arrest from Chennai Airport on the midnight of 20-21 June 2018 of Advocate Vanchinathan, State Co-ordinator of People’s Rights Protection Centre and practising law at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court and also legal advisor to the Anti Sterlite Struggle Committee. He has been arrested in crime no 190 of 2018 Sipcot police station/sec 147, 148, 188, 353, 506(2) and sec 3 of TTPPDL Act in connection with the Tuticorin incident. It is contemptible that while maximum support has been given to the corporate, people’s struggle is being ruthlessly crushed and public people and intellectuals who have stood by the genuine struggle are being targeted by the Tamil Nadu govt. On the other hand, while the strength of the movement has forced closure of the polluting plant, the corporate is now raising the bogey of ‘’threat’’ of pollution by stored acid to people’s lives to press for reopening of the plant, restoration of electricity connection and right to re-employ manpower!… Read More
CPIML(New Democracy) condemns the contemptible gunning down of Shujaat Bukhari, Editor of Rising Kashmir and its three sister publications on June 14, 2018. Eloquent spokesperson of and firm believer in the right of self determination of people of J&K, Shujaat Bukhari ruthlessly exposed the instances of state terror against them. On the same day as he was brutally killed, Bukhari had been using social media to propagate the UN Human Rights Council Chief’s Report on the situation in Kashmir and had commented that it was the first time that the UN had undertaken such an exercise. His gunning down by “unknown” operatives in a high security zone in the capital city of Srinagar- the Press Enclave area- which is teeming with operatives of the armed forces and barrier after barrier to free movement, is astonishing. Even the ex CM of J&K, Omar Abdullah, said on NDTV that it is surprising that the killers were able to conduct a recee, gun down the Editor and his two guards and get away from the area unchallenged.
Bukhari was not just a thoroughly honest journalist; he was also a speaker for the rights of the Kashmiri people. He was part of the movement which reintroduced the teaching of Kashmiri language in the Valley’s schools.… Read More
Collapse of G-7 meeting in Quebec, Canada marks serious intensification of contradictions among the imperialist countries. These contradictions should be viewed in conjunction with rising contradictions outside the G-7 fold. These contradictions relate to economic, political and military spheres. US Admn. under Trump is navigating its own course abandoning leadership role of the western imperialist countries. Successive US Admn. have tried to assert hegemonic role of US imperialism disregarding relative decline in the economic power of US imperialism and rise of other powers, particularly China. Bush Junior Admn. had launched ‘global war on terror’ to perpetuate hegemonic role of US imperialism. But this attempt to stop the wheels of history from turning was stalled by strong resistance of the people against US led aggressions and rising cost of wars undermining a declining economy resulting in bursting of bubble from 2008 onwards. In came Obama, who dreamt of launching the hegemonic project through other means. He boasted of trying to use smart power criticizing his predecessor for using crude power. Leading from behind and attempting to usurp the fruits from the front, Obama strategy too came a cropper. Their drive has resulted in rising conflicts in different parts of the world. Libya is a clear example where their regime change strategy has led to collapse of the state and intensifying sectarian violence.… Read More
After the arrest of five persons allegedly linked to CPI (Maoist) from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi, Central and Maharashtra Govt. are publicizing an alleged plot to ‘kill’ Prime Minister Narenda Modi. They have claimed to find a letter outlining such a plot from the computer of Rona Wilson, a leading functionary of Committee for Release of Political Prisoners. This letter allegedly from a central leader of CPI (Maoist) covers almost all the forces ranged against RSS-BJP.
Neither the origin of this patently planted letter nor its targets are much in doubt. It tries to kill many birds with this single stone. But its special targets are the rising struggles of Dalits and the democratic rights movement in the country. Ruling elites of RSS-BJP are uncomfortable with the struggles of Dalits for economic, social and political justice, incorporated in the Preamble of the Constitution itself. This assertion for equality and against discrimination is opposed to very nature of Hindutva which is in essence Brahmannical assertion of upper caste hegemony in society. While they may tolerate a few from among the oppressed castes to be accommodated in positions of power, they just cannot tolerate struggle for social equality, totally ruled out by their Manusmriti.… Read More
HIS HIGHNESS PRANAB MUKHERJEE, YOU HAVE DENIGRATED MOTHER INDIA BY DESCRIBING HEDGEWAR AS GREAT SON OF THE MOTHERLAND
You have been a leader of the Indian national Congress, theoretically committed to democratic-secular India, for more than four decades, and also occupied the office of the President of India, the highest constitutional office of the country.
Sir, yesterday (June 7, 2018) while addressing a select gathering of RSS cadres at its headquarters, Resham Bagh, Nagpur, which included its top brass, Mohan Bhagwat, you remembered the founder of RSS, KB Hedgewar and wrote the following words in the visitor’s book in his praise, “Today I came here to pay my respect and homage to a great son of Mother India”.
His Highness, there could not be a more blatant lie than this as ‘great son of mother India’ founded RSS in 1925 to oppose the united freedom struggle for an inclusive India. He did not join the freedom struggle because it was being fought for an all-inclusive India and not a Hindu State. He declared minorities, specially Muslims the enemy of India and not the British rulers. He was a diehard Casteist. He was inimical towards the Tricolour which had become a National Flag for resistance to the British 1930 onward.… Read More
CPI(ML)-New Democracy strongly condemns the arrest of Prof. Shoma Sen, Advocate Surendra Gadling, Rona Wilson, Sudhir Dawade and Mahesh Raut this morning from Maharashtra and Delhi. These arrests are a cruel attack on the growing struggle of Dalits against the Brahmannical order and are part of the offensive of RSS-BJP Govt. against the oppressed sections, Dalits, minorities, tribals and backward castes. This is part of the Govt.’s attempts to disrupt and suppress the struggles of toiling masses, peasants and workers, an overwhelming majority of whom belong to these sections. Communist Revolutionary organizations are among the main targets of attack of the RSS-BJP Govts.
These arrests were made ostensibly in pursuance of the FIR No. 4 of 2018 registered on 8th January 2018 at Vishram Baug Police Station under section 153(A), 505 (1)(B), 117, 120B and 34 of IPC. Later sections of UAPA were added in this case. This FIR was an attempt to cover up the violent attacks by RSS linked activists against Dalits going to Bhima Koregaon on January 1, 2018. Maharashtra Govt. has been busy in building a fake narrative of the violence to save the RSS linked people, namely Shambhaji Bhide and Milind Ekbote whose names have prominently figured in the attacks on Dalits.… Read More
