Bangladesh : Stop Attacks on Minorities, their houses and places of worship

CPI (ML)-New Democracy expresses deep concern at the reports of attacks against minorities especially Hindus in Bangladesh after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina Govt. Communal forces from majority Muslim community of Bangladesh are targeting minorities’ houses and religious places. Interim Govt. of Bangladesh had initially characterized these attacks as not communal but political in character targeted against supporters of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League and that their Administration is doing everything to ensure that such attacks do not take place. However, continuance of attacks against largest minority in Bangladesh shows the failure or unwillingness of Mohd. Yunus led Admn. to take effective measures against such attacks and against communal forces.

CPI (ML)-New Democracy calls upon all democratic, progressive and pro-people forces to come forward against such attacks. Unity of the people against communal and divisive forces is the best guarantee of communal peace and harmony.

CPI (ML)-New Democracy views positively the protests in Bangladesh against these attacks. These protests have drawn large number of people. We hope that all anti-communal forces will join such protests.

Students of Bangladesh had risen against Sheikh Hasina’s dictatorial role. Students of different political persuasions participated in that upsurge. This students’ upsurge was supported by people of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Army’s attitude forced Sheikh Hasina to flee Bangladesh on August 5, 2024. In the wake of widespread movement, communal forces attacked minorities and their places of worship. It is the duty of Interim Govt. and the security forces to protect lives, properties and religious places of minorities.

CPI (ML)-New Democracy condemns attempts by ruling RSS-BJP to use reports of these attacks for their anti-Muslim propaganda here. RSS-BJP adopts an openly anti-minority stand and govts. led by them, at the Centre and in states, launch attacks against minorities, their properties and their places of worship. They are cynically trying to use these unacceptable incidents in Bangladesh for their agenda. Their statements are unhelpful as they pursue anti-minority agenda in India and want to make this country Hindu Rashtra. Their claim of standing with minorities in Bangladesh is hypocritical given their attacks on minorities and their places of worship in India.

CPI (ML)-New Democracy condemns reactionary ruling classes of India and Bangladesh who wish to protect and perpetuate their anti-people rule by dividing the people on religious lines and targeting minorities. In fact their Acts i.e. of ruling dispensation in India and Bangladesh help communal forces in the two countries. People must rise against these conspiracies, strengthen their unity and unitedly build struggles against anti-people rule and policies.
